Tinga Tinga is African primitive flat work. Images are created with enamel paint on muslin fabric. Generally the work is done out in the bush country with the most basic tools.
Tinga tinga paintings have been named according to Edward Said Tinga Tinga (1937-1972). Tinga Tinga comes from Tanga region, Mindu village in Tunduru. He started painting when he was working on building sites. During the breaks he was painting animals and humans. Sometimes he was asked to paint local doctors' or small companies' advertisements on walls. Gradually more and more attention was paid to Tinga Tinga's paintings in Dar es Salaam.
The East Usambara Catchment Forest Project invited five Tinga Tinga painters to get acquainted with the Forests in the East Usambaras and to paint on their impressions. They are all the relatives of Edward Tinga Tinga. Since his death in 1972, his protégées have carried on the bright and whimsical style. Final images are a collage of native animals, scenery and village life with fantasy overtones.
